Etsy, Shopify, or Build Your Own? The Storefront Question in the AI Era

Etsy brings discovery. Shopify brings a commerce engine. A custom Astro or Next.js site on Cloudflare can bring far more design freedom and technical control. The right answer depends on what the site is supposed to do.

The storefront problem

You do not need the most powerful platform.

You need the right amount of platform.

There is a strangely expensive habit in ecommerce: paying for a giant machine because one day you might need all of its buttons.

That can make sense. If you have a serious product catalogue, inventory, shipping rules, discounts, abandoned carts, customer accounts and multiple sales channels, you probably want a giant machine.

But a small creative business, artist, pet portrait shop or side project may need something very different: a place to be discovered, a clean brand page, a few products, and a checkout that does not become a second job.

Three different jobs Etsy helps people find you. Shopify helps you run commerce. A custom site helps you own the experience.
01 / ETSY

Etsy is not your website. That is partly the point.

Etsy is a marketplace. People arrive already looking for something to buy. That built-in discovery is the product.

For a new shop, that can be extremely valuable. Instead of starting with a beautiful empty website and asking, “How do I get anyone here?”, you start inside a place where shoppers are already searching.

The trade-offFees per sale + less brand control

Etsy charges listing, transaction and payment-processing fees, with additional fees applying in some situations or regions. Offsite Ads can also add a fee when a sale is attributed to those ads. In other words: Etsy lowers the barrier to opening a storefront, but it participates in the sale.

The useful way to think about Etsy

You are not only paying for software. You are paying to stand in a busy market instead of opening a shop on an empty street.

02 / SHOPIFY

Shopify is what happens when the store itself becomes the operating system.

Shopify is not simply “a nicer website builder.” It is a commerce platform: products, checkout, payments, discounts, inventory, shipping, analytics, sales channels, apps, customer data and an increasingly large set of AI tools all live in one system.

That is why replacing Shopify with a cheap one-page builder is not really an apples-to-apples comparison. If you are using the machinery, Shopify can save an enormous amount of operational work.

Cost modelRecurring subscription + payment fees
The trade-offRecurring platform cost

Shopify uses a recurring subscription model, with plan structure, payment fees and available features varying by region, billing cycle and setup.

If you are processing regular orders, managing dozens or hundreds of products, running promotions, selling in person, syncing channels or relying on Shopify’s checkout and reporting, the recurring platform cost can be easy to justify.

If your “store” is really five products, one inquiry form and an Instagram account doing most of the marketing, you may be renting a warehouse to store a bicycle.

The cheapest platform is expensive if you have to fight it. The expensive platform is cheap if it removes hours of work every week.
03 / THE CUSTOM STACK

Then there is the option that became much more interesting in the AI era: just build the site.

This used to be the intimidating answer. “Build it yourself” often meant hiring a developer, managing a server, handling maintenance and accepting a much heavier technical burden.

That assumption is getting old.

A modern brand site built with Astro — or a React/Next.js-style stack when the project needs more application logic — can be deployed on Cloudflare’s network with a lightweight infrastructure footprint. For a mostly static small-business site, that can keep the technical setup lean while still providing global delivery, SSL and room to add server-side features when needed.

01 Astro / Next.js

Fast pages, complete layout freedom, content collections, SEO control.

02 Git + AI coding

Design, components, content and iterations can move dramatically faster than a few years ago.

03 Cloudflare

Global delivery, SSL, CDN and serverless tools for lightweight sites.

04 Your domain

Your permanent address on the web, independent of the platform behind it.

What changed?

AI compressed the distance between “I can describe it” and “I can ship it.”

AI coding tools do not remove the need for judgment. They do make it much faster to create layouts, write components, debug CSS, connect forms, improve accessibility, generate structured data and iterate on ideas. A small brand can now build something far more distinctive than a template without automatically taking on an agency-sized development process.

There is an important catch: a custom site stays simple only while the site itself is simple. The moment you recreate advanced ecommerce — cart logic, taxes, inventory, returns, customer accounts, complex shipping, subscriptions — you are rebuilding the systems Shopify is designed to handle.

That is why one of the smartest lean combinations can be a custom brand site + an external checkout or marketplace. The website tells the story. Etsy, Shopify checkout, Stripe Payment Links or another commerce layer handles the transaction.

04 / SIDE SHELF

And yes, there are plenty of respectable choices in the middle.

WordPress / WooCommerce Maximum ecosystem, more maintenance.

WordPress remains extremely flexible. WooCommerce is open source, while hosting, premium plugins and ongoing maintenance depend on how the site is built and managed.

Squarespace Polished and managed.

Good for businesses that want design, hosting and editing in one place without managing code. Commerce is available, but you stay inside the platform’s system.

Wix Fast no-code setup.

A practical visual builder with hosting and ecommerce tiers. Easy to launch, with the usual subscription-platform trade-off.

05 / THE DECISION

Start with the business problem, not the platform logo.

If your main problem is… Start by looking at…
“Nobody knows I exist yet.”Etsy
“Orders are getting operationally complicated.”Shopify
“My brand site feels generic and I barely use ecommerce features.”Astro + Cloudflare
“I want content + plugins + a huge ecosystem.”WordPress / WooCommerce
“I want to drag, drop and be done.”Squarespace / Wix

And these choices are not mutually exclusive. Etsy can be a discovery channel while a custom website gives the brand a permanent home. Shopify can run checkout while a custom front-end handles a more ambitious experience. A business can change the stack as the business changes.

The less dramatic conclusion

You do not have to marry your ecommerce platform.

Choose the tool that solves today’s bottleneck. Keep your domain, your customer relationships and your brand thinking portable. The platform is infrastructure — not the identity.
